North of Gorgan a wall from west to east (from the Caspian coast, circles north of Qonbad-e Qabus) is the largest defensive wall after the Great Wall of China. At parts, it is 6 m wide and in other parts the width is 10 m which proves different thickness of it in various parts. The wall, the castles and fortresses near the wall all are mostly built of large squared bricks; even the form of the castles and fortresses although vary in dimension and shape are squared. Despite the existance of several natural defensive barriers as it is a mountanious region, the building of the wall was nothing but showing the political power of the ruling govenment. Refering to historians the antiquity of the wall dates back to Anushiravan Sassani time. Gorgan Defensive Wall, Alexander Barrier, Qezel Allan Barrier and Feerouz Barrier are other names of the wall.
